Children may attend DeKalb County schools if they live within the boundaries of the DeKalb School district, are between the ages of 4 and 21, and have not graduated from high school. Three-year old Special Education children may also receive services. To be eligible for first grade, a child must be six years old by September 1 of a given school year. Although state law does not require students to attend kindergarten, it is excellent preparation for first grade, and we encourage parents to enroll their children. To enter kindergarten, a child must be five years old no later than September 1 of a given school year.
Proof of Residency: All persons wishing to enroll a student in any DeKalb School must show proof of residency in the correct attendance area of DeKalb County. A current utility bill (gas or electricity only), a current lease, or current mortgage agreement are the only acceptable proofs of residency. Phone bills, water bills, personal checks, credit card bills, drivers licenses, expired leases, or old closing statements are not adequate proofs of residency.
Birth Certificate: An original birth certificate with seal must be presented for new students entering pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade. The hospital copy is not acceptable. If the child was born elsewhere in Georgia, call the Georgia State Office of Vital Records at 404-656-4901.
